MPme

MPme is curated radio.

MPme listens to thousands of radio stations in real-time and uses that data plus your music library, listening habits and those of your friends to recommend stations that will be great for you. And then you can listen to them.

So if you’d like to listen to your favorite radio station, it’s easy. Just search for your favorite station, we’ll fetch it and you can listen.

But we’ll also use that radio station to look for other stations that are similar and playing music that you may enjoy. So if your favorite station is playing something you don’t really like, then you can switch over to something that will play something you like AND also perhaps introduce you to something you didn’t know. How do we do this? Well, we use data from a multitude of providers, including The Echo Nest, mix it all together and add our own software engineering expertise.

Why should I bother using this application when there are so many others around?

For example, I can use Spotify to play whatever I want, whenever I want. I have a huge iTunes library that I own and can play for free. Or how about Pandora? Isn’t that the same?

Not quite. These other services are ways for you to listen to music but they do things a little differently to MPme. For example, take Pandora. Pandora uses algorithms to allow a machine to gain a sense of who you are and what you like. But MPme takes a more personal approach. It looks to DJs to help out.

DJs are professionals when it comes to making interesting connections between different artists and tracks and they’ll make connections that machines just can’t. For example, they may choose their next song based on a combination of when it came out, its genre, the fact that the drummer of the last band was the boyfriend of the lead singer in the next and finally, because it’s raining outside. Making these tangible and intangible connections is what gives DJs and their radio stations some personality. And makes them interesting.

What else can MPme do?

Well, you can see extensive information about stations, artists and tracks. For example, for an artist you can view biographies, their most popular tracks and which radio stations play them most. You can also visit blogs that talk about them as well as YouTube videos.

You can also use Favorites to keep tabs on stations, artists and tracks so you can quickly look them up when you want to listen to them (or similar) at a later date.

And on top of all that, you can also connect to Facebook and see what your Friends Like. If they’re using MPme, you can see what they’re listening to and join them.
